Samsung‘s December security update is now available for carrier-locked Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 in the US. The latest security patch was rolled out to unlocked units last week as part of the Android 13 update. The big Android update for the carrier-locked models of the foldable duo in the US bundled the November SMR (Security Maintenance Release).
The December SMR for the carrier-locked Galaxy Z Fold 4 in the US comes with firmware version F936USQU1BVL7. The same update for the Flip model bears the firmware version F721USQU1BVL9 (via). The package appears to contain more than just the latest vulnerability fixes. Unfortunately, Samsung’s changelog only says the “overall stability of your device has been improved”. Maybe it’s about some critical optimization or bug fix. The company released two December updates for the foldables in international markets. The second release, which came a few days back, mentioned the same changes in the release note.
As said earlier, the unlocked Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 units in the US have already picked up the December SMR. But since it came as part of a bigger Android 13 update, it’s unclear whether they received these so-called “overall stability” improvements. If not, Samsung may seed a second update to those, or maybe bundle those changes with the January 2023 update, which should be available next week. If you’re using either of the latest Galaxy foldables stateside, watch out for a new update. You can check for updates from the Settings app. Go to the Software update menu and tap on Download and install.
The Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Flip 4 are getting a host of security fixes with this update
The December security update for Samsung’s Galaxy devices patches as many as 80 vulnerabilities. As usual, not all vulnerabilities exist on every Galaxy model, but many do. Some of the flaws patched this month are critical and could allow bad actors to remotely take control of your device. Other exposed sensitive information to a remote attacker. The latest update for the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 patches all of these vulnerabilities.
With December coming to an end, Samsung may soon start rolling out the January 2023 Android security patch to its devices. The company usually begins the release even before we step into the new month. But it has been a little occupied by Android 13 updates in recent months. It should pick up the pace very soon. We will let you know when the January 2023 SMR is available for Galaxy devices.
