Corning’s new Gorilla Glass 7i aims to protect mid-range devices

Gorilla Glass 7i

Corning has introduced its latest protective cover glass called the Gorilla Glass 7i. It has arrived as a variant of the 7th-generation glass, which was released four years ago with the Gorilla Glass Victus moniker. While the Gorilla Glass Victus series is aimed at more premium devices, the Gorilla Glass 7i targets affordable products.

It’s worth mentioning that the Glass 7i isn’t a follow-up to the Gorilla Armor, the brand’s best glass protection yet. The flagship glass arrived in January with the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra.

The Gorilla Glass 7i targets mid-range and more affordable devices

Corning has announced that the new Gorilla Glass 7i is engineered to provide durability for intermediate and value-segment mobile devices. The “i” in the name stands for “industry-leading innovation for intermediate devices”. Corning claims that the Gorilla Glass 7i can survive drops from up to 1-meter height.

It can survive drops on some serious tough surfaces replicating asphalt. The competitive lithium aluminosilicate glass from other brands typically breaks when dropped from half a meter or less, Corning notes in the press release. Furthermore, the brand suggests that the Gorilla Glass 7i is two times more scratch-resistant than the lithium aluminosilicate cover glasses.

OPPO will be the first brand to unveil a phone with the new Corning glass

As per Corning, the Chinese smartphone brand OPPO will be the first company to introduce a phone with the Gorilla Glass 7i. Unfortunately, there’s no word regarding the name or any official details from OPPO itself. Besides smartphones, the new Corning glass is suitable for other electronic products like smartwatches, fitness trackers, and more.

Apart from OPPO, other brands are also expected to use the Gorilla Glas 7i in their new products. The new Gorilla Glass fulfills the need of manufacturers looking for a more modern protective glass for their devices.

It will appeal to the phone makers looking for an option that fits in a more modest budget, while providing flagship-grade protection. We should have more details in the coming weeks, so stay tuned to Android Headlines for the latest updates.
