Google could bring a YouTube Music extension for Gemini

At first, it seemed that OpenAI had Google cornered with ChatGPT. It was much more capable of a chatbot than Google’s chatbot, which was Bard at the time. However, and we knew this was going to happen, Google eventually started integrating its AI chatbot with its numerous services to make a more fleshed-out AI platform. Well, Google is working on a YouTube Music extension for Gemini.

Already, Google has integrated Gemini with certain extensions that make the AI platform more useful. For example, the company already introduced a Workspace extension and a Google Maps extension. These allow Gemini to integrate with these services so that you can access them right from the chatbot. The above-mentioned Google Maps extension allows you to get location-based answers based on information provided by Google Maps.

Gemini could get a YouTube Music extension

If you’re an avid Google user, then you’re most likely a YouTube Music user. Well, if you want Gemini to use its generative AI prowess to help you discover new music, then the rumored YouTube Music extension may be what you’re looking for. However, it’s important to note that this is only a rumor at this point. You’ll want to take this with a grain of salt.

Notable leaker AssembleDebug discovered some code within the Google app version So, since this has not been officially announced, there’s a chance that Google may take this away.

How the feature could work

AssembleDebug was able to get this extension working. In the screenshots below, we see the ability to enable the YouTube Music extension. Enabling the extension will give Gemini access to your YouTube Music listening history. This way, you can get an idea of the kind of music you want to listen to.

It’ll also gain access to your playlists and preferences. Enabling the extension will also give YouTube the ability to “share parts of your conversation and other relevant info with YouTube Music.”

So, when you’re using Google Gemini, and you want to use it to find some music based on your tastes, you can simply ask Gemini to find you some music. It will also suggest music based on your mood.

What’s neat is that, if you don’t have the YouTube Music app installed, Gemini will direct you to the YouTube Music web page. This is helpful for people who migrate to a new phone but don’t want to install YouTube Music on it.

At this point, we don’t know when Google plans on releasing this feature. Since Google I/O is just around the corner, there is a chance that the company will speak about this feature during that event.
