Samsung rolls out May security update for Galaxy S22 series

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra Review AM AH 09

Days after rolling out One UI 6.1, Samsung is following up with another update for the Galaxy S22 series. It is pushing the May security patch to the 2022 flagships. Other models, including the Galaxy S23 series, should also get the latest security update in the coming days.

Galaxy S22 gets Samsung’s May security update

Samsung recently started updating the Galaxy S22 series to One UI 6.1 globally. Some users may have yet to install the new One UI version but the company is already ready with the next update. The phones are currently getting the May security maintenance release, aka SMR, in Europe. The new firmware build number is S90*BXXSAEXE3. A global rollout might follow shortly.

As the build number tells us, this update is all about security fixes. For the uninitiated, the sixth character from the last specifies whether it is a feature update or just a security patch. “S” denotes the latter, while Samsung uses “U” for a feature release. For example, the One UI 6.1 update for the Galaxy S22 series in Europe had the build number S90*BXXU9EXE1.

This update may not have any new features to look forward to, the latest SMR contains plenty of important security fixes. Samsung’s updated monthly security bulletin says the May release patches 55 vulnerabilities across the Galaxy family, at least three of which are critical Android OS flaws. You should install new security patches as soon as possible to plug these flaws.

If you are using a Galaxy S22, Galaxy S22+, or Galaxy S22 Ultra in Europe, this month’s security releases should be available to you anytime now if it hasn’t already. You can navigate to Settings > Software update > Download and install to check for updates manually. To check the current security patch level, go to the About phone section in Settings and then to Software information.

More Galaxy devices will get the May security patch soon

Samsung released the May SMR early in May but hasn’t pushed it to many devices, likely because it got caught up in the One UI 6.1 update. The Galaxy S24 series is the only phone to receive the new security patch globally. The Galaxy S22 series has just joined the party and it should mark the beginning of a wider rollout. We will let you know as and when Samsung updates other Galaxy devices to this month’s security patch. We will also keep you posted on the One UI 6.1 update.
