It seems that locking your Galaxy or Android phone remotely using the Find My Device app will be easier soon. Google is also working on streamlining the Find My Device login process.
A lost device tracking system has been available for more than a decade on Android. The feature was first called “Android Device Manager,” which was renamed in 2017 to “Find My Device.” Recently, Find My Device received its biggest update ever, integrating a network that allows you to locate your device even when it is not connected to the internet. This is similar to Apple’s Find My network which has been available for some time.
Google working on making remote locking easier using Find My Device
Currently, Find My Device allows you to lock and erase your device’s data remotely. This requires you to first sign in with your Google credentials on the Find My Device platform. However, recent findings from Android Authority suggest that Google will integrate a feature to remotely lock your device’s screen simply by using your phone number and passing a quick security challenge.
You can do this from any device, which will allow you to act quickly. This is especially useful when you don’t remember your Google access credentials and need to lock your lost device as soon as possible.
You will be able to log in using biometric data
The company is also making it even easier to log into Find My Device. Currently, you have to enter your credentials every time, which can be a bit annoying. You can prevent this by enabling “Don’t Ask Again,” but this is dangerous. After all, someone else could access the app from your device. So Google is working on a feature to enable biometric unlocking as a login method.
This means that instead of asking for your credentials every time you open the app, you can log in with your fingerprint or using face unlock. According to the report, the new options will be implemented on all devices running Android 10 and above. They will arrive through a Google Play Services update.
It’s noteworthy that some companies have their own “Find My Device” network. For example, Samsung has “Find” (formerly called SmartThings Find) that allows you to remotely locate, lock, or wipe data on Galaxy devices. So, Galaxy device users have both options available for added peace of mind.
