First Snapdragon 8 Gen 4-powered device may arrive in October

Snapdragon 8 series SoC

A new report claims that the first product powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chipset may arrive in October. But not only that, it also refutes recently leaked benchmarks where the chipset showed low scores.

As reported by Digital Chat Station, the first phone with the latest Qualcomm SoC could be launched in mid-October. Previous reports suggest that Xiaomi will debut it in its Xiaomi 14 series. Xiaomi would be followed by names like OnePlus and iQOO shortly after.

However, the source also sheds more light on recently leaked benchmarks. A few days ago, Geekbench results for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 emerged. They showed a low score, and the chipset also ran at a maximum CPU speed of 2.4 GHz. In comparison, the most powerful core of the current Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 reaches 3.3 GHz.

Latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 benchmarks are from a low-frequency prototype

Now, Digital Chat Station clarifies that the previous results correspond to engineering samples with low-frequency cores. Chipset manufacturers often test their products under multiple conditions. This allows them to determine the performance they can offer in different use cases. Also to experiment and make decisions regarding energy efficiency.

In fact, the source claims that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 will actually have a maximum speed of 3.6-4 GHz. The SoC would use a “2+6” architecture, with 6x high-performance cores and 2x efficiency cores. The final setup is expected to get Geekbench scores of around 2.7K in single-core tests and 10K in multi-core tests.

It would not be the most efficient Android SoC

Qualcomm may be doing multiple tests to tweak things and improve the energy efficiency of the chip. Some recent reports suggest that Snapdragon 8 Gen 4-powered flagships would need to use larger batteries due to potential high power consumption. Also, the SoC may be behind its Exynos counterpart in terms of energy efficiency. The company will launch it in October this year.
