Microsoft might be working on a Nintendo Switch competitor

Xbox Series X Review 4

When it comes to gaming, you have stationary yet powerful game devices like PCs, PlayStations, and Xboxes. Also, you have less powerful, yet portable consoles like the Nintendo Switch and the Steam Deck. It’s perfectly balanced, as all things should be. However, it appears that Microsoft could be looking to create a portable Xbox console to have a leg on both sides.

This information is extremely early, so you’ll want to take it with a grain of salt. If the rumor is true, then we will not be seeing this device for several years. So, anything could happen or change between now and then.

Microsoft could be working on a portable Xbox console

This comes amid rumors that the Xbox brand could be dying. Of the three major gaming companies- Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo- Microsoft is the only one that has not made a portable gaming console yet. Nintendo has its Game Boy, DS, and Switch consoles. Sony has the PSP and PS Vita. We’ve all been wondering what Microsoft’s take on a portable gaming console would be.

Well, there may still be hope for us to see it. According to a new report, Xbox could potentially be working on bringing two new consoles to the market in the near future. One of them may be a very powerful stationary console. This could be a more powerful version of the Xbox Series X.

Along with that, Microsoft could also be working on a portable gaming console that will also be dockable. This is reminiscent of what we see with the Nintendo Switch and the Valve Steam Deck. Both consoles bring console-level graphics and pack them into a portable form factor.

If the company does launch a console like this, then it’s going to have to bring some serious gaming chops if it wants to keep up with the competition. By the time it launches (if it launches), it’ll be going up against the Nintendo Switch 2 (if that’s what it’s going to be called). If Nintendo doesn’t royally screw up with the device, we expect that console to be extremely popular. Truth be told, we’re pretty sure that it’s going to trounce the Xbox portable gaming console; Nintendo has the portable gaming console market locked up.

However, Xbox has never really been about selling consoles. Microsoft doesn’t gain much money from its gaming consoles, and it doesn’t sell a ton. However, the company has still been able to breed a thriving community of gamers, and that’s what it’s all about. So, if Microsoft does release a portable gaming console, it’ll be interesting to see it all the same.

When will this console come out?

According to the rumors, Microsoft may not release this duo of devices until the end of 2026. That’s quite the wait; who knows where the gaming console market will be in the span of two short years? We will just have to wait and see what happens.
